PPP wants end to policy of seat adjustments with 'N'
LAHORE - The PPP Punjab hierarchy has urged its top leadership to end its verbal understanding with the PML-N, according to which, the two parties are in agreement not to field candidates against each other in by-elections on seats vacated by their candidates.
There had also been such moves by PPP Punjab leaders in the past, but they failed to convince the leadership that wanted to continue its policy of reconciliation with PML-N. “But this time around, the party has decided to give a serious thinking to the matter,” said a party source privy to the development, adding that recent developments have forced PPP leadership to review its policy towards PML-N which was not letting any opportunity go to let down the PPP government in the Centre.
The PPP leaders think that if the two parties are practically violating the agreement, there was no point in continuing with the hypocrisy.
It merits mentioning here that following singing of the CoD between the two parties in 2006, they had also reached un understanding that in case of a by-election, they would field their respective candidates against each other only in a situation if the seat had been left vacant due to resignation by a parliamentarian belonging to some other party or by an independent one. On seats vacated by either of the two, they were supposed to support each other’s candidates to facilitate their victory vis-a-vis other parties.
Though the agreement did not exist in written form, but they had been adhering to it for quite some time in the beginning in line with the spirit of CoD. In the recent past, however, there had been violations of the accord by the two sides as they started covertly supporting independent candidates, though technically abiding by the understanding.
